Emotions ran high after Tottenham's defeat to West Ham, especially for Mathys Tel, whose substitution sparked immediate controversy. This season, Tel's playing time under manager Thomas Frank has been inconsistent. However, he recently earned a starting position, featuring in the last three league matches.
The situation intensified when Tel was substituted while Tottenham was desperately trying to equalize. His visible frustration fueled speculation about his future with the team.
But what did Frank have to say? He stood by his decision, even though he acknowledged Tel's performance was not the issue. Frank explained, "I had to make a tactical choice and remove an offensive player. I believed Wilson was better suited to the right wing, and I wanted to have two strikers on the field. That was the decision. There was nothing wrong with Mathys' performance."
This decision, however, is where opinions might diverge.
Regarding the team's overall situation, Frank focused on the positives, comparing the team's progress to turning a supertanker. He mentioned that he had seen a letter and extracted several positive aspects.
Frank elaborated, "What I take from that letter is that the club and the executive team, with Vinai at the helm, are aligned and understand that this is a significant transitional phase. We are steering a supertanker in the right direction. There are promising signs behind the scenes and in some performances. But, of course, losing in the last minute to a rival is emotionally charged, and there will be noise."
He concluded by emphasizing the need to remain focused: "We need to keep that noise away and keep working hard, continuing to do the right things."
