It seems the tables have turned! We Europeans once smirked at Americans for their gas-guzzling SUVs, preferring smaller, more efficient cars. But guess what? We're now just as smitten, if not more so. SUVs are dominating the European market, but the story is more complex than it seems.

The SUV Surge: A Near-Dominant Force

SUVs are practically everywhere in Europe. Their market share has skyrocketed, leaping from 41.3 percent in 2020 to almost 60 percent today. Data from Dataforce, reported by Automotive News Europe, reveals this dramatic shift. Leading the charge is Volkswagen, with its T-Roc and Tiguan models. The T-Roc saw a 4.5 percent growth in the first 11 months of 2025, reaching 196,123 units sold, while the Tiguan grew by 1 percent to 180,562 units during the same period.

The Unexpected Champion: The Dacia Sandero

But here's where it gets interesting! Despite the SUV takeover, cars haven't been entirely defeated. The Dacia Sandero, a non-SUV, surprisingly clinched the top spot, selling 225,862 units through November, even with an 8.7 percent dip in sales. Its close relative, the Renault Clio, followed in second place, with sales up 5.2 percent, reaching 206,583 units. With a new generation Clio hitting the streets in 2026, its popularity is expected to continue.

The Shrinking Hatchback and Sedan Segments

While the Sandero and Clio thrive, the hatchback segment is on a downward spiral. What was once 35 percent of all vehicle sales at the beginning of the decade has shrunk to 23.9 percent. In raw numbers, this translates to a drop from 4.2 million units in 2020 to an estimated 2.9 million in 2025. The rise of SUVs has also impacted sedans, whose market share fell from 4.7 percent to 3.5 percent, and wagons, which declined from 10.2 percent to 7.1 percent.

Is an SUV Really an SUV?

But here's a controversial point: The definition of an SUV might be stretched a bit. Some popular models, like the Toyota Yaris Cross and Peugeot 2008, are essentially jacked-up hatchbacks. Clever marketing has convinced many buyers to opt for these crossovers over their more affordable hatchback counterparts.

The Price Factor

Despite the SUV craze, pricing remains a significant factor. This explains why cars like the Sandero and Clio continue to sell so well. Other popular cars, including the Peugeot 208, Opel Corsa, Toyota Yaris, Citroën C3, and Skoda Octavia, also made it into the top 20 best-selling vehicles in Europe in 2025.
