Son of UK couple jailed in Iran details 'unsafe' conditions amid protests (2026)

A British family's plea for help has captured the world's attention, as the son of a couple unjustly imprisoned in Iran shares his fears for their safety amid the country's tumultuous protests.

Joe Bennett, whose parents, Craig and Lindsay Foreman, were arrested on spying charges during their global travels, paints a dire picture of their situation. Speaking to the BBC, Bennett reveals his parents' predicament: "They're in a dangerous position. The jail is overcrowded, and with the ongoing protests, it's only gotten worse."

The Foreign and Commonwealth Development Office (FCDO) has acknowledged the case but maintains they're still "assessing the situation." Meanwhile, the UK government has temporarily closed its embassy in Tehran, citing security concerns for staff.

Bennett's parents had planned to seek refuge at the embassy if released, but with it now closed, their options are limited. "Where do they go? What do they do now?" Bennett asks, highlighting the uncertainty and fear his parents must be facing.

During their brief communication, Bennett's parents described the prison conditions as "unsafe" and "frightening." Vermin infest the kitchen and beds, and fights break out daily, adding to the chaos and tension.

Last year, Scottish National Party MP Brendan O'Hara suggested the couple was being used as "bargaining chips" in the political tensions between Iran and the West.

Bennett expresses frustration at the perceived lack of support from the UK government, contrasting it with the advocacy shown by other nations like France, the US, and Italy when their citizens face similar situations.

"We just want the government to show some solidarity with our family's plight," Bennett adds.

The Foreman's legal team in Iran has submitted a bail application, and their defense lawyers have written to the court, asserting the couple's innocence and the unlawfulness of their continued detention.

As Iran's deadly crackdown on anti-government protests rages on, with a reported death toll of at least 2,400, Bennett's primary concern is ensuring his parents' safe return.

"My mum and Craig are innocent UK citizens caught in the crossfire. We just want them home safely, whatever it takes," he concludes.
