Could former Penn State head coach James Franklin be heading to Virginia Tech? That's the question burning in the minds of Nittany Lion fans as the college football coaching carousel gears up for another spin. But more than just idle speculation, this potential move could have HUGE implications for Penn State's recruiting efforts and future success.
With the 2025 season nearing its end, all eyes are on the coaching landscape. While Penn State fans are laser-focused on their own coaching search, the possibility of Franklin landing at a regional recruiting rival like Virginia Tech adds a whole new layer of complexity. This week's fan chat delved deep into the realities of this scenario, exploring what went wrong for Franklin during his tenure with the Nittany Lions and what a potential move to Virginia Tech could mean for Penn State's future. But here's where it gets controversial...some believe Franklin's departure, while perhaps disappointing, could ultimately pave the way for a fresh perspective and renewed energy within the program. What do you think?
Here's a glimpse into some of the questions tackled in the weekly chat:
- The Franklin to VT Rumors: Fact or Fiction? How real is the possibility of James Franklin coaching at Virginia Tech, and what would be the fallout for Penn State in terms of recruiting and player retention? This is a big one, as losing recruiting ground to a program like Virginia Tech could set Penn State back significantly. And this is the part most people miss...it's not just about the recruits Franklin might take with him; it's about the message it sends to future recruits about the stability and attractiveness of the Penn State program.
- Is James Franklin a "Dude"? This question dives into the personality and leadership style of the former coach. While seemingly lighthearted, it touches on the qualities fans look for in a head coach – someone who can connect with players, inspire confidence, and build a winning culture.
- Rebuild or Retool? Will the new coach frame the PSU job as a complete rebuild to buy themselves more time, or will they insist that the program only needs minor adjustments to reach the pinnacle of success? This is crucial because it sets expectations for the fans and the administration. A coach who promises immediate success might face immense pressure, while one who acknowledges the need for a longer-term rebuild might be given more leeway. But here's where it gets controversial... Is it even possible to "retool" a program at this level without fundamentally rebuilding it?
- Recruiting Prospects: Chaz Coleman and Koby Howard. Are these highly sought-after recruits destined to become Nittany Lions in 2026? Recruiting is the lifeblood of any successful college football program, and securing commitments from top prospects like Coleman and Howard is essential for Penn State's future. Terry Smith Sheds Light on In-Game Adjustments
Many fans believe the head coach can instantly override any play call he dislikes via the headset. However, interim head coach Terry Smith clarified that the reality is far more nuanced. His influence is more about guidance and suggestions than outright dictation.

"Yeah, I’m on the headset," Smith explained. "So when offense is up, I hear them. When the defense is up, I hear them. I sit quiet, I hear everything. If I don’t know what something is. I ask a question, but Coach Kotelnicki and Coach Knowles, they have 100 percent power to make the calls. In between series is when I may ask questions in the sense of, why did we do this? Why did we do that? Why didn’t we make this call, why didn’t we make that call? But you can’t interrupt a play caller in the middle of his flow and rhythm during the series."
