Oscar Piastri Recalls the Turbulent Alpine F1 Contract Saga: A Journey of Resilience and Triumph
In a captivating interview, Oscar Piastri, the Australian racing driver, delves into the intense contractual drama that unfolded in the middle of 2022. It was a period that tested his resolve and shaped his future in Formula 1. "It was undoubtedly a challenging period," Piastri reflects in an exclusive Off The Grid video, filmed in his Monaco residence in November. "As a racing driver, the desire to compete is natural, and not being able to race was tough. But it taught me valuable lessons."

The drama intensified when Alpine faced a dilemma with three exceptional drivers vying for two seats. Piastri emerged as a strong contender alongside established drivers Fernando Alonso and Esteban Ocon. The team considered loaning Piastri to Williams, but a twist emerged with Alonso's move to Aston Martin. Alpine then announced Piastri's promotion, only for him to vehemently deny the decision.
In a public statement, Piastri wrote, "Without my consent, Alpine F1 issued a press release confirming my participation next year. This is incorrect, and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for them."
It was later revealed that Piastri had signed a contract with McLaren, and the FIA's Contract Recognition Board ruled in McLaren's favor. Piastri humorously acknowledges the magnitude of the situation, stating, "I knew it would be a significant story, and there were reasons for my actions, not just a spontaneous announcement."
The outcome? Piastri made his F1 debut with McLaren in 2023, a moment he describes as "incredible." Despite missing out on the 2025 drivers' title, his achievements are impressive, boasting six pole positions and 26 podiums, including nine victories, in 70 grands prix.
