NBCUniversal is set to launch a new sports channel, NBC Sports Network, next week on November 17th, just as it prepares to phase out most of its cable channels. This move comes as the entertainment giant seeks a dedicated home for its extensive lineup of live sports events, which will also be available on the Peacock streaming service.
The new NBC Sports Network will offer a diverse range of sports programming, including live NBA and WNBA games, Premier League soccer matches, Big Ten and Notre Dame football, Olympic sports, and the popular whip-around show, Gold Zone, hosted by Scott Hanson. Additionally, NBCU plans to include Major League Baseball (MLB) games, with details to be revealed in an upcoming agreement.
This launch is significant as it marks the resurgence of a channel that previously existed as NBCSN (NBC Sports Network) until its closure in 2021. The new channel aims to provide a seamless viewing experience for pay-TV customers, offering a comprehensive sports portfolio. According to Matt Schnaars, President of Platform Distribution and Partnerships for NBCUniversal, the channel will cater to various stakeholders, including fans seeking an aggregated sports experience, league and conference partners for broad reach, and advertisers targeting engaged sports audiences.
The channel's availability will initially be through YouTube TV, followed by Comcast's cable company, Xfinity, shortly after the launch. This strategic move by NBCUniversal demonstrates its commitment to providing sports content across multiple platforms, ensuring accessibility for viewers wherever they choose to watch.
