Manitoba's Healthcare System: Ready for the Respiratory Virus Season?
As the chilly winds of November usher in the respiratory virus season, Manitoba's healthcare system is gearing up for a challenging period. But here's the good news: provincial officials claim they're more prepared than ever before.
Health Minister Uzoma Asagwara highlights the significant strides made since the NDP's election in 2023. The province has welcomed approximately 3,400 new healthcare workers and added 323 beds, with another 34 on the way. Of these, 10 intensive care beds have been allocated to Winnipeg's hospitals, with the remaining beds spread across various cities.
However, the question remains: why do long waitlists persist despite this increased capacity? Asagwara points the finger at the previous Progressive Conservative government, citing years of cuts and underinvestment that left hospitals understaffed and lacking space. The NDP, since their election, have been working tirelessly to rebuild, but as Premier Wab Kinew emphasizes, "repairing the damage takes time."
And this is where it gets controversial... While the system is stronger, the respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) season, typically lasting from November to March, poses a significant threat. Last year, Manitoba witnessed a surge in RSV cases, with the majority caused by the influenza A(H1N1) strain. Children under five, especially those under six months, were the most severely affected, requiring hospitalization and intensive care.
Manitoba's Chief Public Health Officer, Brent Roussin, warns that respiratory virus season strains the healthcare system, leading to delayed surgeries. He emphasizes the importance of vaccines, noting that almost no one admitted to the ICU for influenza-related issues is vaccinated. So far this year, there's been a 10% uptake in flu and COVID vaccines, but Roussin expects the true numbers to become clearer in the coming weeks.
