The search for Gus Lamont, a four-year-old boy missing for months in the remote outback of South Australia, has taken an intriguing turn. When Detective Superintendent Darren Fielke, the officer in charge of the Major Crime Investigation Branch, entered a room of waiting journalists, it was clear that the case was about to take a new direction. A few minutes into the press conference, Detective Superintendent Fielke announced that he was "declaring the disappearance of Gus Lamont to be a major crime." This shift from the previous assumption that Gus had simply wandered off from his homestead near Yunta was significant. The police had been searching for Gus extensively, and Detective Superintendent Fielke detailed their efforts, which included an "unprecedented" foot search with significant resources, such as 160 SAPOL members and 230 "non-SAPOL resources." The search covered a radius of 5.47 kilometers from the Oak Park Station homestead, an area equivalent to about 95 square kilometers. The reason for this radius was based on data from the National Search and Rescue Manual, which indicates that children aged four to six are located 95% of the time within this distance from their last known place. However, despite the mammoth search efforts, Gus or any items belonging to him have not been located. Detective Superintendent Fielke said he would not rule out further searches if new information comes to light. Dr. Jim Whitehead, a former search and rescue coordinator, described the efforts so far as a "textbook search." He explained that the police had done the areas of highest probability first, searched around the homestead, and worked their way outwards. While the search has gone beyond the walking-on-the-ground phase, it is now an intel-driven search. The remote location of the property, with challenging conditions and temperatures dropping below 10 degrees Celsius at times, adds to the complexity of the search. The station is 45 kilometers inland from the nearest main roadway, and access is limited by several gates, some of which are regularly locked. The search for Gus Lamont continues, and the police remain committed to finding him, but the remote and challenging nature of the search area makes it a difficult task.
