A tragic event unfolded on Highway 401 near London, Ontario, as a school bus crash claimed the life of the driver and injured several children. This incident has sent shockwaves through the community, prompting investigations and raising concerns about safety.
On a somber Sunday, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) reported a devastating school bus crash on the westbound lanes of Highway 401 near London, Ontario. The accident resulted in the death of the bus driver and sent four children to the hospital with minor injuries.
The OPP has confirmed that 42 individuals were on board the bus at the time of the collision. However, the exact number of students involved has not yet been disclosed.
The accident occurred around 9:40 a.m., causing the bus to veer off the road before overturning. The westbound lanes of Highway 401 between Veteran's Memorial Parkway and Highbury Avenue were immediately closed for investigation and cleanup.
OPP Constable Steven Duguay stated that the bus driver was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the driver's death is currently under investigation, with authorities refraining from speculation until a thorough examination is complete.
The deceased driver, a 52-year-old man from the Waterloo region, will not have his name released by the police.
Within a couple of hours of the accident, a command center was established at the East Lions Community Centre in southeast London. Parents, many visibly emotional, were reunited with their children.
According to reports from parents and students, the bus was transporting a Grade 9 class from the Kitchener Waterloo Collegiate and Vocational School (KCI) to Point Pelee National Park for a multi-day school trip.
One of the students, 13-year-old Charlotte Weldon, recounted the harrowing experience, describing how the bus veered off course and ended up in a ditch. She, along with other students, had to escape through the emergency hatch.
Linnea Knight, whose twin daughters, Maddie and Lily Knight, were on the bus, described the frantic moments following the crash. Maddie and Lily reported that they saw wood flying before the bus swerved into the ditch. They also mentioned that they believed the bus hit a sign before rolling over.
But here's where it gets controversial... While the exact cause of the crash remains under investigation, some students and parents have suggested the driver may have experienced a medical emergency. However, police have neither confirmed nor denied this, stating that it is too early to determine the cause.
Constable Duguay stated that the investigation is ongoing and that authorities are considering all possible factors, including mechanical issues or medical episodes.
Linnea Knight, relieved that her daughters were mostly unharmed, expressed her hope that the incident would spark conversations about school bus safety.
And this is the part most people miss... The section of the highway remains closed, and the OPP is working to provide updates as soon as possible.
