Ready to be amazed? A brand-new exhibition is shining a spotlight on the incredible work of Gen Z photographers, and it's a window into a world you won't want to miss.
Running until February 2026, the Photo Elysée in Lausanne, Switzerland, is hosting Gen Z: Shaping a New Gaze. This exhibition features the work of 66 photographers from around the globe, all born between the mid-1990s and 2010. What makes this so special? It's a deep dive into how this generation is challenging the status quo and redefining their place in a world that's constantly changing.
These artists are using photography to share intimate stories, explore multiple identities, and reimagine family dynamics. They're also fearlessly exploring themes of the body, gender, and the complexities of our world. They are giving voice to a multitude of perspectives. The artists are asserting their need for representation and their desire to speak out in an unstable global context.
Co-curator Hannah Pröbsting shared, "I certainly do not want to claim that you can come in and understand the generation with this exhibition... But we do feel that the people who don’t expect to be moved are moved. And I think if there’s one thing that I want people to take away, from a photography point of view, it’s that this generation has complete agency over telling their own story.”
The exhibition is thoughtfully organized into four thematic sections, offering an immersive experience:
- Mapping a Sense of Belonging: This section explores the home as a foundation of identity, delving into archives, memories, inherited traumas, and new forms of cohabitation.
- Shifting Realities: Here, you'll find reflections on political, social, and environmental upheaval, with themes of exile, instability, and resilience.
- Beyond the Mirror: This section presents the body as a space of transformation, where artists question gender norms and explore emotions, mental health, and inner life.
- Multiplying Perspectives: This section examines race, history, and culture, showcasing how Gen Z photographers reclaim their narratives, challenge dominant representations, and propose new visual languages.
But here's where it gets controversial... This exhibition is not just a collection of pretty pictures; it's a powerful statement about the future of photography and the voices that are shaping it.
