On this World COPD Day, we're highlighting a remarkable initiative by the American Lung Association. A disease that affects millions, COPD often leaves people feeling lost and alone, especially those in rural areas. But here's the good news: the Lung Association is offering a free, personalized support program to COPD patients nationwide.
The Lung Health Navigator program connects patients with licensed healthcare professionals, including registered nurses and respiratory therapists. These navigators provide one-on-one support tailored to each individual's needs. Whether it's a phone call, online chat, or video call, patients can choose the mode of communication that suits them best.
"COPD is a challenging disease, impacting over 11 million people in the U.S.," says Harold Wimmer, President and CEO of the American Lung Association. "Many lack access to specialized care, and some don't even know where to start with lifestyle changes and medications. That's where our navigators step in. They guide patients through treatment options, help with insurance coverage, and provide the support needed to navigate this journey."
COPD, a chronic lung disease, restricts airflow and makes breathing difficult. While there's no cure, treatments like supplemental oxygen, inhalers, medication, and lifestyle changes can greatly improve symptoms and quality of life. However, income and education disparities often create barriers to optimal treatment, especially in rural areas where COPD rates are twice as high as in urban communities, leading to more hospitalizations and deaths.
The Lung Health Navigator program is part of the Lung Association's Living Well with COPD campaign, offering free support, education, and resources tailored to every stage of the disease.
