The 23-year-old's frustration stems from the tournament's scheduling, which places her opening match on the first day of competition, immediately following a men's fixture that could extend to five sets. This rapid turnaround and the potential for an extremely late start have left Raducanu feeling disgruntled.
"It's very difficult," she said. "You'd love more time to practice, but I was handed a challenging schedule. I need to make the most of what's in front of me."
Raducanu's criticism is directed at the decision to schedule women's matches after potential five-set matches, a situation she finds illogical. Her only comparable experience, she noted, came during her US Open semi-final run, a rare instance of such a schedule.
Adding to her woes, Raducanu has been managing a foot injury that significantly impacted her pre-season preparation. Despite her efforts, her recent performances have shown a lack of match fitness, with a defeat to a low-ranked Australian player in Hobart and an unconvincing display against Maria Sakkari at the United Cup.
"The injury is much better," she assured fans. "I've been managing it for months, and I'm happy with the progress I've made this year."
Raducanu's measured approach to the season is a testament to her maturity. She recognizes that her delayed return to tennis training means immediate results are not expected. She's taking the pressure off herself, aiming for steady improvement rather than expecting perfection.
Her opponent on Sunday, Sawangkaew, is a formidable challenge. Ranked 195th in the world, Sawangkaew is making her grand slam main draw debut. Raducanu, however, remains cautious, acknowledging the potential for an element of surprise.
"It's a tricky situation," she stated. "Playing a lot of matches, even at ITF level, can be very dangerous. You never know what to expect."
Raducanu's first match is scheduled for 9:40 am at the Margaret Court Arena, with the potential for an early start if the men's match extends. Despite the challenges, she remains focused on her goals, aiming for Grand Slam glory five years after her US Open triumph.
