In a dramatic turn of events, Deontay Wilder's recent appearance on talkSPORT nearly escalated into a physical confrontation with presenter Simon Jordan over contentious allegations involving Tyson Fury. This encounter unfolded as Wilder, the American heavyweight boxing star, along with his colleague Derek Chisora, came to promote their upcoming fight scheduled for April 4 at London's O2 Arena.
However, what was meant to be a promotional discussion soon spiraled into chaos when Jordan broached the sensitive topic of Wilder's previous matchups against Fury. "I don't want to discuss him," Wilder asserted vehemently right from the start. "We’re here to talk about Derek Chisora. Let's make that clear."
Despite Wilder's insistence, Jordan pressed on, asking the 40-year-old fighter about his long-standing accusations against Fury, particularly regarding claims that Fury had manipulated the padding in his gloves before their second and third fights, both of which resulted in victories for the British boxer.
Things quickly escalated when Jordan characterized Wilder's explanations for his defeats as "flaky," expressing disappointment in how the former champion was handling the situation. Wilder, visibly agitated, responded forcefully, "Because I know the truth! I possess the facts. You need to understand that!"
As tensions rose, Wilder stood up and moved toward Jordan, prompting security personnel to intervene to prevent any potential altercation. "I don’t care about that!" Wilder shouted emphatically. "I made it clear we didn’t want to mention him at all. This has nothing to do with him!"
Ultimately, Wilder left the studio abruptly, cutting the interview short, while Chisora remained seated and unaffected by the verbal clash. During this heated exchange, Wilder referred to Fury as "the biggest cheat in boxing," reiterating his accusations that Fury had removed glove padding prior to their fights.
Wilder also hinted at forthcoming evidence to support his claims, stating, "When the documentary and everything starts to come out, I’m going to reveal everything."
Jordan had brought up various justifications Wilder has given for his losses over the years, which includes claims of spiked water and an alleged long count by the referee during their initial bout in 2018, which ended in a draw. When Jordan mentioned accusations about Wilder's extravagant ring walk costume being overly heavy, Wilder refuted that specific claim while standing firm on his other allegations.
Interestingly, just a day prior, Fury seemed to address these persistent accusations through an Instagram post. He remarked, "You don’t see me whining about it or claiming someone cheated. That’s just not my style."
The upcoming bout at the O2 Arena is significant for both fighters as it marks the 50th professional fight in their careers. Wilder steps into the ring having faced a challenging stretch, managing only two wins out of his last six matches, following knockout losses to Zhilei Zhang and Joseph Parker. His latest fight came last June when he scored a seventh-round stoppage against Tyrrell Anthony Herndon.
On the other hand, Chisora enters the match in a much more favorable position, having achieved three consecutive victories, including a decision win over Otto Wallin just last month. The 42-year-old British fighter is expected to announce his retirement after this bout, closing the chapter on a long career where he has faced numerous top-tier heavyweights.
