Ever wondered what it's really like to be an actor? Billy Crudup, a name synonymous with stage, screen, and television brilliance, pulls back the curtain in a captivating interview. From the pressures of Hollywood to the triumphs of Broadway, Crudup shares his incredible journey, and trust me, you won't want to miss it.
In this week's episode of The Actor’s Side, Crudup, currently shining as Corey on The Morning Show for its fourth season, dives deep into his multifaceted career. He's also starring opposite George Clooney in Jay Kelly, which just premiered, and is gearing up to take on the iconic role of Will Kane in a new stage production of High Noon in London's West End. Could this also mean a return to his Broadway roots? Only time will tell!
Crudup, a two-time Emmy winner and a Tony winner, takes us on a rollercoaster ride through his career. He paints a vivid picture of the 'carnival life' of acting, sharing his regrets, fears, and, of course, his victories. "I’m happy to be working — whatever they put me in, I’m happy to go,” he humorously admits.
He recounts his early days, including his first film, Sleepers, made 30 years ago with legends like Robert De Niro and Dustin Hoffman. He also talks about replacing Brad Pitt in Almost Famous as a guitar-slinging rock star (despite never having played before!), singing in Woody Allen’s only musical (he wasn’t a singer!), and playing runner Steve Prefontaine in Robert Towne’s Without Limits. He even faced off against a face-hugger in Ridley Scott’s Alien: Covenant.
But here's where it gets controversial... Crudup shares a hilarious anecdote about playing the bad guy opposite Tom Cruise in Mission: Impossible III. He had to learn a monologue the same day they shot it, and couldn't remember it! The advice he got from Cruise is priceless.
We also delve into Corey's adventures on Apple TV's The Morning Show, including how he had to convince executives he could even do the part. There's also his role in Jay Kelly, where he plays an actor who loses a career-defining role to Clooney's character – a masterclass in scene-stealing.
Now, he's stepping into the shoes of the reluctant Marshal Will Kane in a timely stage production of High Noon, putting his own spin on the role that won Gary Cooper his second Oscar.
